Q.
Why is this site described as a 'sister site' to your Wardley
Colliery site?
A. My original intention when I started looking at the old church yard
was to photograph the epitaphs of Wardley people only and add them
to my Wardley Colliery site as an addidion to the Church Records
kindly provided by Gordon Stridiron. However I recognised faced with
such a wealth of material, I really needed to create a new
site devoted to St Mary's Church Graveyard.
Q.
Is
there any point in having a web site devoted to old graveyards?
A. Of course there is.
Heworth Churchyard is a great store of social history, where many
people come to seek their roots. This peaceful and tranquil oasis
hosts not only great beauty among hundreds of varied monuments, but
gravestone inscriptions are a wonderful source of information for
both the local historian and for the genealogist.
Q.
Isn't
it a bit morbid wandering around graveyards?
A. No, Why not pay a visit yourself, feel the
atmosphere of this wonderful old cemetery and have your imagination
stimulated.
Q.
Are
the photographs on the site 'free' to copy?
A. Yes, with a few restrictions as outlined on
the main page.
Q.
Are
you going to add any photographs of other cemeteries?
A. No. I have a site called Tyneside Grave Matters which covers
other cemeteries.
Q.
Can I
add my own cemetery photographs to your site?
A. No, I'm
afraid not. All the images (apart from vintage photographs) on this
site are my own & I
don't accept submissions for various reasons.
Q.
Are
you going to have a separate page for military graves?
A. Yes. There
are 81 military graves in the
Heworth St Mary Churchyard
and the adjacent Felling Heworth Cemetery listed by the
Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Each grave will have its
own page with a high quality photograph and any details that
are known about the deceased.
Q. Are
you going to photograph recent gravestones?
A. I do. But I will not publish them on any of my sites
as a mark of respect. I would also need permission from the family
of the deceased. However, if I was asked to photograph and publish a
modern grave, I would probably do so.
